Pinworms Infection - Symptoms, Causes and Treatments

Pinworms are a very common infection in the United States and foreign countries. Many children in daycare and their household contacts are at risk of developing this infection.  The most common symptoms of pinworm infections are itching around the anal region.

This is caused by the female pinworm laying eggs. People spread the eggs when they use the restroom or when they eat without washing their hands. Sometimes contamination occurs through clothing or personal items. Generally infections are not spread via swimming pools due to the chlorine content. Pets do not carry pinworms. There is a special scotch tape test that can be performed to locate eggs from the anal area. Sometimes worms can also be seen.
Treatment is actually very simple by using an over-the-counter medicine called Pin X. However, reinfection occurs very easily. All members of the household should be treated at the same time. If you or a family member have a possible pinworm infection, talk to your doctor today.
