Warts-Common skin diseases
Skin warts represent some
of the most common skin diseases that occur in healthy people of all
ages. The wart itself is an overgrowth of skin caused by a virus. The
human papilloma virus has many different subtypes and is the most
common cause.
Warts often grow very
slowly and may not be obvious until several weeks after the initial
exposure. The exposure is from direct contact with another person who
also has warts. Sometimes warts will spread among family members or
players on a sports team who have close contact.
Different parts of the
body can be affected including the fingers, feet, and face. Warts can
be a concern cosmetically, especially if they multiply rapidly. Warts
on the feet are usually painful because the roots will invade into
the sole of the foot and each step causes more pressure.
There are different
treatment options for common skin warts. These include salicylic
acid, duct tape, or freezing the wart. Talk with your physician
before starting any of these treatment options to determine which one
is best for you.
