Causes of acute Kidney failure
Kidneys are extremely important for the body’s filtration of chemicals that build up in the blood. Each person is normally born with 2 kidneys, however there are some people who may have only one kidney.
Acute renal failure occurs when the kidneys have suddenly stopped working and the body is building up waste products, fluid, electrolytes, and other harmful chemicals in your body.
There are several different causes of acute renal failure including a serious drop in blood flow to the kidneys, medication side effects, poisons, infections, or urinary blockage.
A person in a car accident may bleed internally or externally and reduce the blood pressure too quickly. Patients can also become dehydrated such as running in a marathon or working outdoors in the summer.
Many over-the-counter and prescription medications have side effects on the kidneys. These can include diabetes medicines, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, blood pressure medications, or contrast dye used in CT scans.
Kidney failure can also occur if the urine cannot leave the body properly. Kidney stones, tumors, injuries, or prostate enlargement can cause urinary outflow blockages.
People die from acute kidney failure unless they are treated quickly and properly. If you are concerned about any kidney problems, immediately go to the nearest urgent care or emergency department. The physician will need to test the urine and draw blood immediately.
